Bicycle Racks on City Buses

Battle Creek Transit recognizes the health and environmental benefits of riding bicycles. A growing number of City residents use bicycles to travel throughout the Battle Creek area. By June, 2007, Battle Creek Transit hopes to have bike racks on all of its route buses to make traveling by bus and bicycle that much easier. The information below will show you how to operate the bike racks.

Loading Your Bike

Please remove pumps, water bottles and locks which are being stored on your bike while you wait for the bus.

Loading Your Bike
A quick wave to and eye contact with your bus operator before you step in front of the vehicle will let them know you intend to load your bicycle.

Loading Your Bike

If the bus arrives with the bike rack folded against the bus, release it by pulling the handle up and lowering the rack.

Loading Your Bike

If only one bike is being loaded, put it in the position furthest from the bus. Face your bicycle so that the front tire is facing the locking arm. (The rack is labeled for your convenience.) Lift your bicycle onto the rack.

Loading Your Bike

With your bike’s wheels in the wheel wells, pull the spring-loaded locking arm out and over your front bike tire as close to the frame as possible. Make sure it is placed on your tire and not on the fender or frame.

Unloading Your Bike

Leave by the front door and tell the operator that you’ll be unloading your bicycle.

  1. To release your bike, simply pull the support arm away from and over the wheel.
  2. Lift your bike from the rack.
  3. If the rack is empty please fold the rack against the bus by pulling the handle and raising the rack until it locks into place.
  4. Move away from the bus quickly toward the curb and let the operator know it’s safe to leave.

Unclaimed bikes inadvertently left on Battle Creek Transit vehicles may be retrieved by calling 966-3474. Be prepared to describe the bike and prove ownership.

Battle Creek Transit’s Bike Rack Policy

You and your bike ride for a single fare. No special permit or advance reservation is required. For safety reasons, the operator will not leave the bus to assist you with the loading or unloading of bicycles. Bicycle racks can only carry two bikes at a time and are available on a first come, first serve basis. If you choose to bring your bike with you, you will have to wait for the next bus with available space on the bike rack.

Bikes are not permitted inside buses equipped with bike racks. To allow for faster boarding of you and your bike, before the bus arrives at the stop please remove any loose objects or personal items that could fall off your bike in transit. Be sure to exit the front door and let the driver know you are going to be removing your bike from the rack. Raise the rack after removing your bike, when no other bike is present. Recumbent bikes, tandem bikes, and three-wheeled bikes are not allowed because they do not fit safely into the racks. Battle Creek Transit assumes no liability for injuries or damages incurred to bikes, personal property or persons while using the racks or riding the bus.
